Three Reasons You Should QUIT on Goal Setting Before You Quit on Your Dreams.

Goal setting. You know… that thing all the “self help” experts tell you to do?

It usually looks like this:
Decide what you want, write it down, and set a date when you’ll achieve it.

This sounds GREAT in theory but I’m going to be completely honest with you – I think its trash. As a matter of fact I think you are putting yourself in a position to be extremely disappointed and the reality is the LAST thing you need is another reason to give up on your dream(s) trust me there are already enough of those. I hope some of you strongly disagree with me and if by chance you do…

That’s good because I’ve put together my top three reasons (I’ve got more in case you were wondering :-) ) of why you should QUIT on goal setting now before you quit on your dreams:

1. Disappointment
Every seasoned entrepreneur knows that the secret sauce (if there is one) is in the “doing the work.” Setting an unrealistic expectation to the work means that you’re setting yourself up to judge the outcome. Truth be told… it is IMPOSSIBLE to guess where your greatest opportunities are going to come from much less what is or isn’t a good result.

2. Flexibility
If we could all agree on one thing it hopefully would be this: we can’t control very many things in our lives. Our best of plans typically don’t happen the way we want them to, and here’s the kicker we shouldn’t give our plans too much weight anyways. From personal experience I will say that things NOT going my way has truly made my life infinitely richer. For example, I could NEVER have planned the series of events that has brought me to where I am today. I’ve never been happier.

3. Not Qualified
I see people starting home based businesses all the time. Typical background would be ex-employee, zero entrepreneurial experience, and they are setting these huge aspirations in these short windows of time (2-3 years) of being a millionaire or something else equally romantic. While anything is possible and I’d hate to burst anyone’s bubble – zero skills, unrealistic expectations (lofty goal setting), and very little experience creates a recipe for very bad things. VERY bad things. By the way… guess what keeps someone that’s taken a third on their house, has accumulated a mountain of debt, and still hasn’t created any tangle results to show for it? If you guessed goal setting, you very well could be correct.

With that said, I do want to be very clear.

You should know I firmly believe it’s important to have a clear vision of where you’re headed and what you stand for.

Oh and just in case you still want to goal set (hey if that’s your game, go for it!) here’s a quick fun fact:
Don’t share them with ANYONE! It’s scientifically proven to decrease your chances of achieving them if you do.

Derek Sivers can tell you why.
